Google is set to release a pair of augmented reality glasses known as Project Glass next year, and now it looks like Apple may be working on a similar device. That’s according to a patent filed by the tech giant back in 2006 and recently discovered by Apple Insider, which details a see-through, head-mounted display that gives users augmented reality information about the world around them. The patent was originally filed by iPod engineer Tony Fadell, who has since left Apple.

The usually-secretive Apple hasn’t commented on the iEye reports. The company is also rumoured to be working on it’s own television set, which analysts predict will be announced in early 2013. The sixth-generation iPhone is expected to be announced later this summer, and a smaller version of the iPad is also rumoured to be in the works.

Google will release an early Explorer Edition of Project Glass next year, but will only be available to developers. It will also cost $1500, so it’s quite an investment. There’s still no word on when it will be available to the general public.
